My hubby loves bratwurst. I like them too but I think they are way better with the tangy sauerkraut and the spicy mustard. This was a really quick and tasty dish that would be great on the weekend when you have been working hard in the yard… Or for those school nights when you don’t have time to do anything elaborate. Whenever you fix this recipe, I know you will love it!
On a side note, I can’t wait to try to make my own sausages at home… Brats are first on the list. Do you have any recipe suggestions or tips?
Grilled Bratwurst Sandwiches with Caraway Sauerkraut (from Martha Stewart)
- 1 tbsp butter, plus more for rolls
- 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced
- 1 can (14 ounces) sauerkraut, well drained
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp caraway seeds
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 bratwursts
- 4 hard rolls, halved horizontally (I used hot dog buns because that’s what I had)
- 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
- 1/2 cup bread-and-butter pickle chips, if desired
Prepare your grill to medium heat. Grill the bratwursts until they are cooked through and the juices run clear.
In a medium saucepan, melt the tablespoon of butter. Add onion and saute until soft, about 4 minutes. Add sauerkraut, sugar, caraway seeds, and 1/2 cup water. Add salt and pepper as desired (I didn’t add salt because the kraut brine is enough for me). Simmer until the whole thing is heated through. Set aside.
Butter each side of the rolls and place on the grill for a minute or two. Remove when they are browned lightly. Fill each roll with the sausage, pickles, kraut, and top with good mustard.
We should arrange a sausage making party with David and Kathryn. I have a 5lb sausage stuffer, heavy duty electric meat grinder, sausage casings, and experience. I just hate doing it alone, and Tami doesn’t get into that sort of stuff.
BTW: Kraut is super easy too. I have a cabbage shredder as well.
I agree! I have a stuffer attachment to my Kitchenaid… and nothing else… But I am sure I can learn!
if you only want to make 2lb of sausage, the kitchen aid is ok. Any more and it quickly becomes work instead of fun. Not to mention, the gears they use in the kitchen aids these days are made out of plastic (including the largest 400 watt version), and cannot take the stress of grinding mostly frozen meat for very long. I broke 2 of the smaller 240 watt units before I ponied up the bucks for the big one. The big one lasted me 2 years then went “pop” one day when I was trying to grind meat and quit working. Kitchen aid said it was outside of their 1 year warranty and apologized for my luck.
That is not a very comforting story… Thanks for the warning!
I got this unit after a lot of research. Thus far it has served me fairly well. http://www.amazon.com/STX-TURBOFORCE-3000-SERIES-ATTACHEMENT/dp/B0012KJBR0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371497058&sr=8-1&keywords=meat+grinder+1500+watt
Come to me sweet Bratwurst.
Into my belly!
We had this for dinner tonight, but without all the fancy falderol. I want the FANCY FALDERAL! 😀 Next time for sure!
WOW! Good word usage! It’s a scrabble word for sure!
Your recipe is a winner for sure! Mmmm….
What’s not to like? 🙂 We did go through a sausage making phase a few years back. The results were wonderful—such a treat to find them in the freezer later, after the memories of what a long and messy chore that making them was had faded! I look forward to reading of your adventures.
Any good recipe recommendations?
A classic with a twist. Looks really good!
Indeed. It was a good meal. I love it when everything comes together so easily.
This looks incredible!
Thanks Ashley!
Oh yum. I adore bratwurst sausages. One of my favourite things, ever. I’m not sure why my husband and I don’t eat them more frequently at home. Looking at your photograph, I’d be perfectly happy to eat that gorgeous hot dog for my dinner tonight with a nice tall glass of Weissbier! Thanks for the lovely caraway sauerkraut recipe! xx
Thanks Laura! I hope you try the recipe and enjoy it as much as we did. It is the perfect meal to enjoy with a cold brew… I love summer food!
Yum! I’ve soo been craving sandwiches lately, and this brings back memories from when I lived in Germany. Gotta make this ASAP!
I bet the brats in Germany are amazing. I would love to visit one day…
