A visual tour of Mount Vernon, the home of the first president of the United States, George Washington…
His home…
The view of the Potomac River from his back porch…
The formal garden with the greenhouse in the background. Here he grew pomegranates and bananas. How visionary!
The vegetable garden. After his presidency, the Washington’s had guests every night for over 600 days. According to the tour, Mrs. Washington served ham nearly every day because she thought it was the best food suitable for company.
A bumblebee on a globe amaranth. I can’t wait to grow some of these next year.
It’s like all our old school trips!
You were so lucky to grow up in such a historical area.
wow! thats a really beautiful place… π
It was. I really enjoyed the time there.
I loved touring that historic place… They did a VERY nice job on the museum, too. I thought the crypt was unbelievable.
I was most amazed by how large and ornate the house was especially for that time. I mean, it’s bigger than my house now! I would love to go back into time and be a guest of the Washingtons.
Indeed…sans the slaves, though, of course. As for the size of the mansion… The tool shed where the old carriage was… THAT is bigger than my house AND lawn. π
Of course. Could you imagine how hard the slaves must have worked just to keep it all together? They were the really impressive ones!
Mt. Vernon is impressive for certain. The view from the back porch is so relaxing! I remember being awed by the outback kitchen space!
Could you imagine trying to cook on that today? How hard they must have worked just to eat!
But they had local, fresh food to cook and eat – even if it was primitive and not at all what we are used to. That must have been so healthy and yummy!
And if it wasn’t healthy, you burned so many calories cooking and gathering that it didn’t matter!
Ahhh…those were the days!
Can we go on a dorky site-seeing trip sometime?
Anytime! I would love to!
